5 minutes for Earth

February 1st, in France, between 7:55 and 8:00 PM, Alliance for Earth (Alliance pour la planète) launches a citizen and simple action that touches everyone: the association asks everyone to turn off electronic items and light.
The action has been named “a 5 minutes break for the planet”. This new campaign should permit any citizen to show off their determination against Global Warming. It is a simple mean to make visible the fact that mobilization is more and more urgent. It also bring different questions about our energy consumption, says the association “Earth’s Friends”, which coordinates the national action for Alliance for Earth. Everywhere in France, People and businesses are joining the action. A meeting will take place in Nice on the “Promenade des Anglais”, and in Paris under the Eiffel tower.
The mobilization is spreading all over the world, so Belgian and Brazilian association already joined the movement.
A five minutes break for Earth, is to be seen as a symbol to attract people’s and media’s attention. It also shows the candidates for Presidential Elections that Global Warming is a great issue that needs to be debated.

Needless to say, this event didn’t attract too much attention in Singapore. I’d be interested to know what happened in Europe.

This resonates one of the key note address delivered by Shell CEO Jeroen Van Deer (no link here as it is in company’s internal circulation, however if anybody interested I can post the full lecture note)- The Energy Supply allows evolution but not revolution. It was a very balanced act on the one hand while accepting the the challenge of three “C”s associated with alternative energy sources – clean, cheap and convenient with one of the main execuse ( with strong statistics figure supporting his argument)that the even at the present initiatives by major oil and gas companies, the alternative energy sources can not meet the growing energy demand.
Against this backdrop, this kind of initiatives by Earth Watch will not only raise the awareness but also hopefully to decelerate the growing energy demand. However, it wont be successfull in isolation, if the government and business comes together in implementing energy efficiency standards in line with enviornmental regulations and other policies to make it successfull as energy, prosperity and environment are all interlinked.
