Chamtor Day Trip

Today our pedagogical trip took us to Chamtor Industries in the Champagnes-Ardenes region.  The trip was quite interesting and surprised me as it was not what I had expected (especially after having visited the SMART factory).  The presentation right at the beginning of the morning gave a general overview of the business and also talked about the specific processes involved with their business model.  It was refreshing to know pretty much everything used in the input (wheat) was used up, from producing sugars to starches and leftover bio-products were also used as animal feed.  The only hint of waste was produced by the administrative section of the company thru paper and human waste.  We also toured the section of the company which housed an outdoor natural filtration plant of the human waste produced – smelly but eco-friendly!

All in all, a good trip, but do not try the free candies…they taste more like wheat/barley than actual candy.
